노다지와 호러스 알렌 그리고 운산광산(Nordaji, Horus Allen, and Unsan Mine)

노다지는 천연자원의 보물창고 광물 또는 횡재를 뜻하는 말입니다. 그런데 이 말은 영화 노 터치(No touch)에서 시작되었습니다. [노 터치(No touch)는 영어문법에 맞지 않는 표현이고 돈 터치(Don't touch)가 영어 문법에 맞는 표기입니다.] 이 이야기는 고종과 알렌과의 친분에서 시작됩니다. 호러스 알렌(1858~1932)은 대한제국 시대의 주재 외교관이었습니다. 알렌은 언변과 사교술이 뛰어났습니다. 알렌은 고종을 설득해 광산 채굴권을 따냈습니다. 알렌은 고종에게 단 돈 25만원을 주고 채굴권을 가져갔습니다. 당시 운산광산의 연간 생산액은 4950만원으로 현 시세로는 3~4조 원에 달하는 금액입니다. 그 광산은 평안북도에 있는 금광으로 운산광산이었습니다. 이 후 알렌에게 운산광산의 채굴권을 넘겨받은 미국인 사업가들은 조선인들을 고용해 광산을 캐기 시작하였습니다. 조선인들이 '금이다!'라고 하자 미국인 사업가들이 말했습니다. '노 터치(No touch)! 노 터치(No touch)!' 조선인들은 뭐라고 하는지 어리둥절하였고 노 터치? 노타지? 노다지? 가 되었습니다. 광산에서 금이 발견되면 미국인들은 조선인들에게 금을 가져가지 말라고 노터치를 말했고 조선인들은 금이 나왔다며 노다지라고 불렀던 것입니다. 이 때부터 사람들은 금이나 귀한 것을 일컫는 말을 '노다지'라고 불렀습니다.  '노다지'는 오늘 날 횡재나 뜻밖의 귀한 것을 일컫는 말이 '노다지'입니다. 그 속에는 개화기 서양인들에 의해 경제적 수탈을 당하는지도 모르고 자신들의 일만 묵묵하게 해냈던 조선 광부들의 애환이 담긴 이야기가 있습니다.

Allen took the mining rights with Gojong for a mere 250,000 won. At that time, the annual production of Unsan Mine was 49.5 million won, which is about 3 to 4 trillion won at the current market price. The mine was a gold mine in North Pyongan Province and it was Unsan mine. After that, the American businessmen who took over the mining rights of Unsan mine to Allen hired the Koreans to dig the mine. When the Koreans said 'Gold!' American businessmen said. 'No touch! No touch!" Koreans were puzzled by what they said. No touch? No touch? No touch? has become When gold was found in the mine, Americans told Koreans not to take gold, and Koreans called it "Nodaji" because gold came out. Since then, people have called gold or precious things 'Nodaji.' "Nodaji" refers to today's windfall or unexpected precious things. There is a story about the joys and sorrows of Joseon miners who did their jobs silently without knowing that they were being robbed by Westerners during the period of enlightenment.
