레오나르도 다빈치는 자연관찰을 좋아하고 호기심이 많았으며 상상하는 것 또한 좋아했습니다. 레오나르도 다빈치는 모자리자에게 보일듯말듯이 웃어보라고 하였습니다. 3년 후 여전히 레오나르도 다빈치는 완벽한 미소를 그리기 위해 고민하였습니다. 레오나르도 다빈치가 그린 모나리자의 미소는 세상에서 가장 신비하고 아름다운 완벽한 미소이며 살아있는 것보다 더 자연스럽다고 칭송받았습니다. 그림을 본 사람들은 한결같이 찬사를 보냈습니다.

 레오나르도 다빈치는 어렸을 때 '나비는 어떻께 날 수 있을까?' 궁금해하다가 새를 해부해보기로 하였습니다. 훗날 다빈치는 수많은 새와 잠자리, 나비, 박쥐를 해부하고 관찰한 뒤에 나무로 된 뼈, 끈으로 된 힘줄 가죽을 덮어씌운 비행 날개를 만들었습니다. 다빈치의 질문은 꼬리의 꼬리를 물고 이어졌습니다. '사물은 멀어질 수록 작아보인다. 이 세상에 모든 것은 비례가 존재한다.' '동작을 만드는 것은 무엇일까? 사람의 뼈와 근육, 힘줄의 세밀한 연결이 수많은 동작을 만들어낸다. 그렇다면 기계는 어떻게 움직이는 것일까? 물은 어떻게 증발하는 것일까? 안개를 만들어내는 것은 어떤 물일까?' 다빈치는 그림을 그릴때마다 여러가지 생각을 하고 실험을 해보았습니다. '심장의 피는 어떻게 움직일까? 소용돌이 바람은 어디로 왔다가 언제 사라질까? 어떻게 그림을 그려야 완벽하게 그릴 수 있을까?' '어떤 물감을 사용해야 자연스럽게 보일까?' 다빈치를 보고 사람들은 '게으름뱅이 화가', '끝을 맺지 못하는 유명한 화가', '완성이라고는 모르는 다빈치'라고 부르기도 하였습니다. 다빈치는 자신이 상상한 것, 생각한 것, 연구한 것 등을 그의 노트에 그림과 글로 끊임없이 남겨놓았습니다. 그 노트만 해도 자그만치 11만 3000장이었습니다. 그것을 쌓아놓으면 어른키 3배가 되는 양입니다. 다빈치의 노트에는 도시의 모습, 사람의 몸 속, 신기한 발명품, 자연 현상, 무기 만들기, 연극과 화려한 축제 등의 많은 생각들이 있습니다. 다빈치는 완성시키지 못한 것들이 많았지만 그는 세상 모든 것에 관심을 가졌고 언제나 새롭고 창의적인 생각들이 샘솟았습니다. 그는 날고 싶었으나 날지 못했고 우주를 보고 싶었으나 보지 못했고, 심장의 역할을 알았으나 단 한사람도 살리지 못했습니다. 그는 수정체의 역할을 알았으나 카메라도 망원경도 만들지 못했습니다. 그는 로봇의 원리도 깨달았지만 누구도 그 원리를 필요로 하지 않았습니다. 그는 말했습니다. But his ideas were invented in later generations.
