법과 정의의 상징인 해태(Haitai, a symbol of law and justice)

현재 해태상은 광화문의 바로 앞에 위치하고 있습니다. 하지만 1890년대 흥선대원군이 광화문을 재건하기 전까지 해태상은 이 곳에 없었습니다. 해태상이 있었던 곳은 광화문에서 수십미터 떨어진 육조거리 였습니다. 그 곳은 조선시대 6개의 관청이 있던 곳이었습니다. 불을 막는 상상 속의 동물 해태를 왜 관청 앞에 세워놓은 걸까요? 예로부터 해태는 옳고 그름, 선악을 판단할 줄 아는 영물이었습니다. 해태는 사람들이 서로 싸우면 그 중 죄 지은자를 찾아 벌 할 줄 아는 법과 정의를 상징하는 동물로 여겨졌습니다. 이런 의미로 조선시대 사헌부 간원들의 옷에도 해태가 새겨져있었습니다. 조선시대 관리들의 비리를 감시하라는 뜻에서 법과 정의의 상징인 해태를 육조거리 앞에 세워두었던 것입니다. 일제강점기 때 일제는 광화문 주변 일대를 철거하였고 궁궐 안에 조선총독부를 짓고 해태상을 가져와 장식품으로 놓아두었습니다. 광복과 함께 경복궁이 복원되었지만 육조거리가 사라진 지금 정의의 상징이었던 해태는 불을 막아준다는 전설 속의 동물로만 기억되고 있습니다. 해태는 법과 정의를 수호하는 영물로써 우리의 소중한 유산입니다.  

 

Currently, Haitai statue is located right in front of Gwanghwamun Gate. However, Haitai statue was not here until Heungseon Daewongun rebuilt Gwanghwamun in the 1890s. The place where Haitai statue was located was Yukjo Street, dozens of meters away from Gwanghwamun. It was the place where six government offices were located during the Joseon Dynasty. Why is the imaginary creature Haitai standing in front of the government office? Since ancient times, Haitai has been a gifted judge of right, wrong, and good and evil. Haitai was considered a symbol of law and justice, among which people could find sinners and punish them if they fought with each other. In this sense, Haitai was also inscribed on the clothes of the officials of the Joseon Dynasty. Haetae, a symbol of law and justice, was placed in front of Yukjo Street in order to monitor corruption among officials of the Joseon Dynasty. Japanese colonial era At that time, the Japanese removed the area around Gwanghwamun, and built the Governor-General of Joseon in the palace, and brought a statue of Haitai and kept it as an ornament. With the liberation of Korea, Gyeongbokgung Palace was restored, but now that the Yukjo Street has disappeared, Haitai, a symbol of justice, is remembered only as a legendary animal that prevents fire. Haitai is our precious heritage as a guardian of law and justice.
