매미의 청렴함을 담은 왕의 모자 <익선관> (a king's hat containing the integrity of cicadas)

1545년 조선 13대 왕에 오른 명종은 세자 후보들인 왕손들을 불러 왕의 모자를 벗어 차례대로 써보라고 하였습니다. 다른 왕손들은 왕의 모자를 썼지만 셋째 왕손은 무릎을 꿇고 이렇게 이야기하였습니다. "임금께서 쓰시는 것을 어찌 신하가 쓰겠습니까." 명종은 셋째왕손의 대답을 듣고 크게 감명하였고, 셋째왕손을 세자에 봉합니다. 그 세자는 바로 조선 14대 왕 선조였습니다. 선조의 운명을 결정한 모자는 바로 <익선관> 이었습니다. <곤룡포>란 금색 실로 용의 무늬를 새겨 넣은 왕의 의복을 말합니다. <익선관>은 왕의 모자로 또 다른 왕의 상징입니다. <익선관>에는 앞쪽은 낮게, 뒤쪽은 높게 자리 잡은 두 개의 둥근 턱이 있습니다. 얇게 다듬은 대나무와 말총를 곱게 쌓아올리고 정성스럽게 옻칠을 한 후에 모자 뒤에 두 개의 둥근 뿔을 붙여 완성합니다. 익선관의 한자어 뜻은 날개 익, 매미 선, 모자 관으로 매미의 날개를 품은 왕의 모자라는 뜻입니다. 왕이 쓰는 모자에 왜 매미의 날개라는 말이 들어갈까요? 매미는 농부가 지은 곡식을 탐하지 않고 이슬만을 먹고 삽니다. 예로부터 매미는 깨끗하고 욕심이 없는 청령함을 상징해 왔습니다. 조선의 왕들은 언제나 익선관을 머리에 쓰고 매미의 청렴함을 담겠다는 마음으로 정사를 돌보아왔습니다. 익선관은 백성들을 위한 왕의 각오를 담은 모자입니다.
